Purpose

This tool mentor describes how to create a private workspace for individual work. A 'private workspace' is isolated from the workspaces of other team members. It provides a place for a developer to make changes to the system without seeing or affecting other developers' changes.

Overview

This tool mentor is applicable when running Windows 95/98/NT 4.0.

For development work, each team member needs to create and name a workspace that provides a stable, unchanging working environment. With ClearCase UCM, a workspace consists of a ClearCase stream and a view associated with that stream.

Tool Steps

Each developer uses an individual development stream for performing work in isolation from the rest of the team. Development views provide access to the source files and activities in your development stream In the UCM model, this is typically done by a developer when joining a UCM project. Private work areas, called development work areas, can also be created any time in the course of working on a UCM project. The general steps are:

  1. Review project information
  2. Choose locations for views
  3. Attach a view to a stream
See The Join Project Wizard help for detailed information.

1. Review project information To top of page

Before creating a work space, review the project's existing streams and views taking note of the names and locations of streams and views and the types of views (snapshot or dynamic) that are in use.

For detailed information on steps to this procedure, see the following ClearCase help topic
