You may save the map with the change if you require. (NB: The overlay feature is just another method of annotation.) AThe maps themselves take up less space on the disk than is required for display (.MBM files are reasonably well compressed). If you have any difficulties, try closing other open applications. Ideally you should have at least 1MB free memory available to run RealMaps, or 0.5MB if you don't use World2.MBM Typical free memory requirements for each map are (including program run space):- World.MBM 268KB World2.MBM 932KB Europe.MBM 512KB BriIsles.MBM 484KB nnotation.) ZBThe standard maps are designed to be usable worldwide so they do not contain any city or country names by default. It is envisaged that this information will be included in any user-maps. However, the author has included a database of city names that can be used to add names temporarily to any referenced map. This facility is accessed by pressing P or from the menu for additional control. It is also possible to search the database and jump to a named location (Shift-P). Permanent or semi-permanent additions can be made using the similar function under the 'Add' menu or by the use of overlays. xCThe four maps supplied with RealMaps may be duplicated for any purpose provided that the small copyright identifier is not altered or palette changed so that it is invisible. The copyright identifier must be reproduced at the same size if a clip from the map is used which excludes this area. In addition if you use any of these maps in a publication, document, web page, or computer program, then you must include a visible acknowledgement that reads :- RealMaps Chart 1998-Kevin Millican : Reproduced with author's permission You may modify(improve) the maps and redistribute them. In this instance you must add the text : 'Modified by ...' or something similar near to the original Author's copyright message. The new identification message should not be less prominent than the original but may be the same. You may make your identifier much more prominent than mine if you wish. Table1 Topic Details "Revision Table1 ColA9 ColB9 ColA10 ColB10 ColA15 Index1 ColA9 Arial Arial ColB10 ColA15 Index1 ColA9 DRealMaps can create additional information files containing place names, extra information about an item, and links to Word, Data, Sheet, Record, and Sketch files which should also be placed in the MapInfo directory inside the Maps directory. It may also be possible to link to third party applications using this option. HotZone On/Off status can be set from the main menu or by pressing Z. If a Hot Zone file does not exist for the particular map then the user will be asked if they wish to create one when switching Hot Zones on. The standard (ie. Not 'Other') applications do not require an application name but do need the name of an existing attachment or one to-be-created. If a Name is given then this will be displayed on the map, otherwise a box marker is shown. It is possible to change the font size and attributes of each Hot Zone. Hot Zones are activated by placing the cursor on the marker and pressing the space bar. This is one of the few keypresses recognised when in GPS mode. When an attachment is run, users should exit the attachment by pressing Fn-System to switch back to RealMaps. The attachment will be automatically closed when switching back to RealMaps. AYou can obtain vector data to create bitmaps from a number of sources on the World Wide Web. You can use bitmaps saved from any licensed software that you own unless specifically disallowed by your license conditions. However the copyright holder's permission should be obtained before distributing any. You may used scanned documents subject to the same copyright restrictions as the above. e the maximum resolution map available. AV1.17 onwards supports printing using the Psion print engine. This works well with screen-sized images but the author has experienced difficulty with large maps, especially when printing via PsiWin. Consistent results are achieved with the parallel link however, suggesting that there is not much that can be done about this. (I guess the Psion print engine was never designed to handle images quite as big as those employed by RealMaps). AUnder the 'Add' menu title there is an option to trace all jumps. With a GPS running this will add your course to the current map. With the aid of a blank, referenced, plain sheet as the background, you can actually create new maps just by driving / walking / cycling / (flying?) about. These modified maps can be saved if desired. You will normally be prompted to save the map before RealMaps loads another. QBIf you use the 'Trace' or 'Annotate' options you may wish to save the current map with your additions. The 'Add' menu option, 'Save Modifications', allows you to do this. You may save the current map with the same filename (you'll be prompted for confirmation before overwriting an existing map) or as a new file. When tracing using a GPS, it is easy for RealMaps to load another map before you have had the chance to do this. Therefore if 'Trace' is on you will normally be prompted to save whenever a map is changed. You can also choose to save without prompting or switch off the feature. AWaypoints can be used to sequence a series of views so that you can step through them using the N and L keys. Up to 100 points can be stored. NB when you leave the program your waypoints are still saved but when restarting RealMaps the 'Last Waypoint' number is reset to '1'. If you want to recall old waypoints then use the 'View Waypoint' and change the 'Last Waypoint' number to the highest figure used. (This is done deliberately so that you work on one journey at a time) CYou may be wondering why the author has used bitmap images instead of vector data to generate maps on the fly. The reasons are as follows :- 1. It is easy to create maps using digital data but (I used it to create the supplied maps) but for high detail work the amount of data and processing time required becomes prohibitive. 2. There are already good examples of this approach available (most notably Steve Litchfield's MapperGB) and I wanted to create something new. 3. The quality of maps and redraw speed can be much higher. It is easier for non-Psion-users acting as navigators to follow. 4. The 'RealMaps' approach is infinitely user-configurable. Users can include detail maps for any area of interest (your country, town, etc.) and zoom in and out to any degree available within the current maps loaded in the \Documents\Maps directory. However, there are some advantages to using vector data - particularly overlay information - and support for this is now included. AWhen RealMaps is performing GPS moving map, it can optionally record the interpreted NMEA sentences to a logfile. To minimise file sizes, only the relevant NMEA sentences are recorded. By default every relevant sentence is recorded but to save space, this can be changed to set intervals of up to 10 minutes. RealMaps can play back these logs (or GPS data captured by other devices) using the 'Playback' function. CThe author has tried to ensure that this software (RealMaps) performs well without impacting on any other software, your hardware, etc. So far, no satellites have fallen out of orbit, no natural disasters have occured, and nothing else unexpected or undesirable has happened. However the author can accept no responsibility for anything adverse that might occur through using this software and advises that its use is entirely at your risk. By using the software you are implicitly accepting these conditions of use. It should be noted that the Author relies on third party translators of the non-English resource files and help file. Whilst I gratefully acknowledge their input, I cannot guarantee that international versions will always accurately reflect the very latest version. The UK English helpfile supplied with the distribution package defines the conditions of use under English Law for all versions of RealMaps. AThe Enter key is used to mark a point as a jump but also sets the reference point for measuring distances. The formula used for calculating this (great circle) distance is said to be accurate to 0.2% even though it assumes that the earth is a true sphere.. This feature can be quite useful when using waypoints with a GPS like the Garmin 12:- the distance shown by the Garmin is always to the next waypoint but RealMaps can be set to show the distance to the final destination. cBRealMaps v1.19 onwards utilises an additional INI file to save user preferences - RM.INI. RealMaps.INI will eventually be used solely for storing waypoint information. RM.INI now saves the following user preferences :- Whether or not to show distances. Distance units. Distance calculation initial point. GPS Baud rate. string. GPS Debug setting. Ignore errors setting. GPS Display type Persistent coordinates setting Degrees display format Language. The new routines for handling these preferences are versatile ensuring that future additions will be easily implemented. /BInstallation is by standard 'SIS' file. To keep the package small and make it easy to utilise more than one language in a session, the standard installations are in UK English. Additional resource and help files can be simply copied to the application directory (\System\Apps\RealMaps) and selected from the main menu. These additional language files will be removed on uninstalling the product however. It should be noted that due to the open nature of the map data files, users may have to manually delete some of their maps after uninstalling RealMaps. DAs supplied, RealMaps has an obvious bias towards the UK and Europe. However you can tailor it towards any region in the world. It is also feasible to rename the places in the WorldCities.S5 database to suit your language preferences. If you produce any good regional maps (and own the copyright) please make them available to others by posting them on the web. To assist other people to find them using seach engines please include the word 'S5RealMapInfo' on the appropriate web page. Version 1.15 onwards utilises text phrases stored in a separate Data file called 'RM-RSC.*'. This works in a similar way to standard resource files but can be easily modified by users to suit their own language. If you would like to modify this file to suit your own language then please contact the author to check that it has not already been done. By prior agreement, the author will grant a free RealMaps registration to anyone who translates the resource file, and/or this help file into a currently unsupported language. The help file entries have dates that can be used to determine when entries have changed, thus saving time when updating an International version and comparing this with the original English version. Cv1.17 onwards support the use of overlays with user-definable levels. A template overlay file is included. This can be opened in Data and the 'import text' function can be used with exported data from other programs. The field types and position are mandatory. Vector lines are defined by N1,E1,N2,E2 and have optional text which is printed at N2,E2. If you wish to place text alone then you must set N2 to 90; the text will then be printed at N1,E1. The levels are fairly self-explanatory; if you choose to overlay level 5, then levels 1-5 will be shown and 6 and above will be omitted. Overlays should be kept in a sub-folder of the folder used to store your maps. Eg. if your maps directory is:- C:\Documents\Maps ,then the overlays should be kept in:- C:\Documents\Maps\Overlays @Hot Zones Import/Exp @Installati Internatio Jumps Keypresses Marking th @Measuring Memory Req Overlays - @Overlays - Palmtop GP Pen Pointe @Preference @Printing PsiGar5 PsiGar5 - @Registrati Removing M Renaming M @Saving Map Sources of @Tracing wi @Troublesho UserInput. This is an ideal way of starting a new map for use with the GPS moving map and trace options. Very accurate coastline data is available on the web in MapInfo text format:- this can be downloaded from the internet and used to overlay the created maps. pDBy default, RealMaps expects to find and be able to view EPOC bitmap files in your C:\Documents\Maps directory. It is possible to use an alternative directory and/or drive by opening a map image from an alternative directory but RealMaps will then expect all maps to be in this location until one is opened from somewhere else. It is recommended that you keep all your map files in the same directory. You can create maps using PC map software, route planning software, scanned images of hardcopy charts, or anything else that can produce a Windows BMP format file. It is even possible to use RealMaps to trace your own map using a GPS (see also 'Creating Blank MBMs'). Convert your map files to EPOC picture files using the BMCONV utility supplied with PsiWin2 and copy these MBM files to your \Documents\Maps directory. You can view the map instantly from within RealMaps by selecting 'Open' from the file menu. However, to use the map effectively you must define reference points for it. (Users in the USA are really spoilt- it is easy to obtain maps of any size down to street level using the Tiger map server on the internet.) @The shortest route between two points on a sphere lies on a 'great circle'. In practice this is only significant over long distances by air or sea. RealMaps can plot the great circle route between the current location and the last marked point. The cursor shows the current optimal bearing when the distance is greater than 200km as well as the rubber band between the current position and the target. This indicator will differ from the track slightly if the map aspect ratio is not 1:1. However the indicator will match the directional GPS cursor if used. Below 200km the simple rubber band is usually accurate enough. CThe standard zoom icons or the keys In, Out may be used. FAQ: by far the commonest question asked about RealMaps is "why won't my map zoom in or out'. When the author has investigated these situations they always fall into two categories. 1. If there is too great a jump in magnification, then there may not be a single pixel on the lower magnification map that is on the higher magnification one (this means that you can zoom out to the correct location but not in again). It is advisable to ensure that the higher-magnification map covers at least 10 pixels square. 2. It is possible for the map to appear to be correctly referenced but for the co-ordinates to be switched around or the min/max lat/long to be set incorrectly. Both can be checked by pressing D to display the current map information. It is essential that the min lat & long are less than the max lat & long, so redefine them if this isn't the case. JBThank you for purchasing or trying out RealMaps. This software is designed to display and navigate high-quality Map images in EPOC picture format. There are three built-in images for the World, Europe, and the British Isles. However, RealMaps is not fussy about the source of the original map and users can create and/or use bitmaps converted to EPOC picture files (MBM) for any region in the world, eg:- A more detailed world view (World2.MBM) with international boudaries is also supplied for use (assuming you have sufficient free memory to display it - see MEMORY REQUIREMENTS) DThis software is supplied on a shareware basis. If you find it useful and wish to continue using it after a reasonable test period (30 days) then you are legally obliged to purchase it. RegNet #2990: This program can be registered through RegNet - The Registration Network. The cost is $20. Nowadays RegNet have a very reasonable handling fee of $4 (it used to be $6.50) so the author receives nearly 10UKP after other handling fees - but before UK income tax :o((. If you have no access to email then the author can provide a registration number by post. (See REGISTRATION &BPalmtop's GPS unit is quite unusual since it doesn't output either the $GPRMC or $GPGLL NMEA sentences. Until recently this meant you could only use it with the $GPGGA moving map mode of RealMaps. However v5.06 will detect if the $GPRMC mode is missing when in '*' mode and try to use the $GPVTG sentence to compensate if available. This would make the waypoint information redundant because the Palmtop GPS doesn't support them. Therefore the waypoint name 'RealMaps' and distance to marked point is substituted when 'Show Distances' is enabled. BWhen you press the Enter key your position is marked. This position also serves as the reference point for measuring dustances. You can jump to this point (or a modified position) by pressing the J key. The 'Jump' dialog box allows you enter lat/long coordinates as :- 1. Decimal Degrees - ignore the minutes and seconds fields and (optionally) use '-' instead of changing to 'West' or 'South'. 2. Degrees and Decimal Minutes - including fractions of a minute. 3. Degrees, Minutes, & Seconds. [See also: Entering Coordinates] CRealMaps and PsiGar5 (by Jonathan Duff) are designed to work together to make it easier to define and upload waypoints to a Garmin GPS. v5.07+ will recognise if PsiGar5 (v5.05 or later) is running when the Enter key is pressed to mark a location. It will then send a message with this information to PsiGar5. Assuming that PsiGar5 is in the correct mode, it will switch to the foreground to allow the waypoint details to be completed. On exiting the dialog box, control will then pass back to RealMaps in the foreground. The PsiGar ddd.ddddd mode must be used, not a degree/minute or OSGB mode. To put PsiGar5 in the correct position to receive data in this manner, press Ctrl-D, select your waypoint file - pressing Enter to load your current file, and then type Ctrl-R to operate under RealMaps control. Tip: Arrange for the RealMaps and PsiGar5 icons to be positioned close together on the extras bar - it makes manual task switching between the two easier. PCRealMaps patches saved MBM files with the map reference information and automatically uses this information when opening new maps that are not already referenced in the MapList datafile. NB The patch format changed in v5.08 so you cannot use v5.08+ patched maps in earlier versions. You can however load maps from v5.07 and below into v5.08+ and the reference points will be converted to the new arrangement. '*.RMi' info files are no longer supported. The 'Save Map Info' option now patches the current map without saving it again. This facility enables you to distribute your maps to other RealMaps users easily. (NB this facility is only intended for maps you create yourself - you must seek the map copyright holders permission before distributing any maps created or modified from other software packages or scanned from hardcopy charts) FThe main functions have shortcut buttons and most of these will work without the need for the Ctrl key to be pressed. The Cursor keys can be used to scroll around the map. (Holding down the Shift key allows precise 1-pixel movement and the Ctrl key increases the increment to half screen height/width) In GPS or playback mode the cursor keys can be used to move the screen reference points. Pressing F will jump to your favourite position on the Map (if you have set one) I will zoom in and O zooms out. J takes you to a dialog where you can enter Lat/Long coordinates to jump to a position. The Enter key marks the current position for a later (J)ump. H allows you to alter the Cross(H)air settings. S allows you to adjust the cursor movement step and the option to automatically load other maps when you scroll off the current map. It is also used to set the 'Distance' option. N takes you to the next waypoint view. L takes you to the last waypoint view. P temporarily overlays the placenames on the current map (assuming it is referenced). Shift-P calls up the 'Find Place' dialog. Z allows the Hotzone mode to be altered. A lets you Annotate (add text to) a drawing. T pulls up the Trace dialog. G calls the GPS moving map facility. V moves to the bottom left (SW) corner of the current map. B moves to the top right (NE) corner of the current map. Q adds the current lat/long to a text file (TRACK.TXT) in your overlays directory (can be used for tracing as the basis of an overlay). There's no dialog here - this is deliberate to achieve speed. W acts performs the same function as Q but allows the user to enter a text string as well. R activates the great circle track calculation. E (without Ctrl) calls up the system task list. BMaps can be deleted from the \Documents\Maps directory at any time. It is essential that there is at least one map which is called WORLD.MBM. You can copy maps back into the directory at any time and their settings will be retained from the last time they were used. (Watch you don't resize or trim them in the meantime though or you will need to redefine the reference points). You can manually edit the MapList datafile using the freeware program PsiDat. It can be useful to sometimes tidy up the MapList file by deleting redundant maps. ABy far the most common problem that can occur is that user-created maps do not appear to zoom correctly. This is less likely in v5.08+ because of additional built-in intelligence within the program. If this still occurs, please load the map and select the 'Map Status' option (or press D). This will display the current reference points directly on the map and should highlight any problems. BAn optional data file - "World.DAT" - is available for use in your overlays directory. If available, it allows a crude coastline to be overlayed on the current map. This is the same datafile used to produce the two supplied world maps. This facility can only be used on maps referenced with two points (ie. cylindrical maps); it's just too slow otherwise. WARNING - this data is not that accurate so don't try and use maps derived from it for nautical navigation or anything other than casual information purposes. +FRealMaps can accept and respond to $GPRMC, $GPGGA, and $GPGLL NMEA signals from GPS systems. There is also a fourth mode '*' which makes use of $GPRMC, $GPGGA, & $GPRMB together. [New for v5.06 - '*' will use the $GPVTG as well if the $GPRMC string is missing]. This last mode also enables support for 3rd party applications. The RMC signal is ideal for moving map display since it also reports speed and COG (course over ground). The GGA signal is ideal for survey-type work and reports altitude and GPS quality information. The basic GLL signal can also be used. You can turn on the 'Jump to Max Resolution' feature in the CrossHairs dialog when using GPS to automatically use the best resolution map available at each location.. The cursor keys can no longer be used to shift the map in one pixel increments during GPS or playback mode as in previous versions. This should not be required now that SA has been discontinued. If you have any difficulties, make sure that your GPS sentence includes the type specified on the Psion (ie. RMC, GGA, or GLL). Also ensure that you are not attempting to send large amounts of data at high baud rates: NMEA output does not support handshaking and at higher rates the Psion's 255 character serial input buffer doesn't leave much time for processing ! Turning off the 'GPS extra info' may assist in some cases. If you still can't get it to work please email some sample output from your GPS and I will endeavour to modify the code to suit ASAP. Code can be captured using the Psion's 'COMMS' application. See also : Palmtop GPS BWhen you set reference points, the software remembers the bottom left and top right points as the outer limits of the map when jumping to a location (eg GPS) or zooming. If your two reference points are not at the corners of the map then you should move the cursor to the lower left and upper right corners and use 'Save Min Lat/Long' and 'Save Max Lat/Long' respectively. The V and B keys can be used to move to these positions quickly. NB: You must use the 'Define Reference Point' options to register the map BEFORE changing the min/max extents. Under some circumstances you may wish to define these ponts away from the map corners anyway. For example; to achieve smoother GPS scrolling or to use a map with additional border information. 1BThe coordinate entry system was upgraded in v5.08. You can enter coordinates in the form :- 30'30"N, 52 30 30, 52:30:30, 52 30.152, 52.50254 and they all mean the same thing. Southerly or Westerly coordinates are indicated by preceding the coordinate string with a '-' sign or putting a 'S' or 'W' at the end (or the equivalent for the defined language). If you use both a negative sign and 'S' or 'W' then the two negatives will cancel each other out. It is also possible to use an external module called UserInput.OPO if it exists. [see UserInput.OPO] CRealMaps can use a user-defined grid reference for coordinate entry if a specially-written module called UserInput.OPO exists in the RealMaps application directory. If the module is present it should contain two OPL procedures:- userinp$:(string$) takes a string variable of max length 20 characters and returns a strings of max length 40 characters which is the latitude followed by a tab character followed by the longitude - both as ordinary decimal strings. If an error occurs, it should return the string :- Error UserDesc$: returns the name of the user-defined grid reference, eg. :- OS Grid Ref To ensure compatibility, the routines should avoid the use of global variables. An example module to allow rough conversion of OS Grid References is supplied within the RealMaps archive along with the source code. The author welcomes anyone to submit a new well-written module (including a better OS Grid one !) in return for a complimentary registration. Currently the '*' GPS mode enables updating of this file at each position change. The file is also updated when the user presses the Enter key in normal map mode. An example application (RMexDemo) using this facility is supplied separately along with it's source code. This provides sounds to match particular GPS events. It is hoped that this facility will allow programmers of other utilities, such as GPS waypoint storage, route planners, directional indicators etc., to make use of this feature. See Also: PsiGar5, UserInput.OPO BThe format used to display degrees and minutes can be changed by selecting the desired option from the Units preference dialog (U). Six options are available :- 0.12345 (decimal degrees) 0.12' (degrees, and decimal minutes to 2 decimal places) 0.123' (degrees, and decimal minutes to 3 decimal places) 0'0" (degrees, minutes, & seconds) 0'0.0" (degrees, minutes, & seconds to one decimal place) 0'0.00" (degrees, minutes, & seconds to two decimal places) The preferred setting is used for all display coordinates including those in dialog boxes. However, data entry of coordinates may use any system including degrees, minutes, and seconds. BVersion 5.02 onwards supports the use of pure text-based overlays. This allows the TRACK.TXT file to be used as an overlay and enables information from a wide range of sources to used. The layout is in the form :- Lat Long Text Level Long Lat Text Level NB In v5.10 the 4th column can be used for an icon name instead - typically this is only used by PsiGar5 export files. The text and level fields are optional. ReaMaps wlll assume that if the text field is blank or missing then it is vector line data, otherwise, vector point (label) data is assumed. Invalid data on a line indicates a vector break. Thus, this one routine can handle line and label data simultaneously in the same file. AYou can tap the screen to move the cursor to a particular point. If you hold the pointer against the screen then you can drag the map to a new position; this is particularly effective when the crosshairs are switched off. The Zoom icons are also operational. If you have the 'Jump to Max Resolution' option enabled, all jumps (including GPS positioning) will result in the program trying to use the maximum resolution map available. BNB: Registered Users Only RealMaps v5.10+ can overlay waypoint icons to match those on the Garmin range of GPS units. This feature is designed to work with PsiGar5's export function but any text overlay can be modified to use it - by adding the required waypoint names to the 4th column. The choice of icon is determined by a lookup against the name in the IconLayout file. IconLayout can be edited with PsiDat if desired. It's also possible to add a practically unlimited number of additional icons to the OverlayIcons file and cross-reference them in IconLayout. An icon can have several references. In fact this is necessary because Garmin haven't completely standardised the names between models. AWhen you register RealMaps you will receive a unique key number. Enter this with your name as printed in your notification into the dialog box to create a key file in the application directory. The presence of a valid key file will prevent the nag screen from appearing when you start and exit the program and will alter the title screen to indicate that the program is registered. In v5.10+ there are a small number of additional features that are only enabled for registered users jumps (including GPS positioning) will result in the program trying to use the maximum resolution map available. Pen Pointer0 Feedback_I welcome any comments, bug reports, and suggestions for improvements. Please write or email.
