A large, white waterbird with a huge bill, and black, trailing edges to the wings. Length: 127-128 cm.; weight: 5,000-8,500 g. Breeds on lakes and marshes in interior North America, and normally winters in the southern States and coastal Central America. However, single birds have been sighted rarely off Puerto Rico (e.g. Vieques, 12 Feb. 1986), and one flock of eight birds was once reported at sea off the Añasco River mouth.
