A small duck with a large white patch on a blackish head (the dark part of the head is dark iridescent green in the right light). The duller female has a much smaller white patch. Length: 33-40 cm.; weight: 330-450 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in central North America. Normally winters in southern North America. Accidental in wetlands on Puerto Rico.
