A large gray shorebird with a black tail, a white rump, and an upward curved bill. In breeding plumage it is mottled brown above and reddish brown below. Length: 36-42 cm.; weight: 196-358 g. Nests on the tundra in Alaska and in northern Canada. Winters in Argentina. Rare during the fall migration in Puerto Rico (e.g., Ca±o Tiburones Nature Reserve, 31 October 2003).
