A tall shorebird with a long neck, small head, and a short yellow bill. Length: 26-32 cm.; weight: 98-226 g. Audio (Mark Oberle). Breeds in grasslands of interior North America and winters on grasslands from southern Brazil to northern Argentina. Although considered a rare visitor during its long distance migration, winds will sometimes blow small flocks of this bird to Puerto Rico, e.g. 1 on Desecheo, 15 Oct. 1987; 28 at the Culebra Airport on 25 October 1998 after a storm. This species was persecuted by market hunters in the 19th Century, and is still susceptible to disturbance on its prairie nesting grounds. TAXONOMY: CHARADRIIFORMES; SCOLOPACIDAE; Scolopacinae.
