A slightly longer-billed version of the Short-billed Dowitcher, but with a lot of overlap in measurements. Length: 29 cm.; weight: 90-131 g. In winter, the voice may be a more reliable way of distinguishing the species. The Long-billed Dowitcher has a sharper, single call note, "keek". Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds on the northern tundra of Siberia, Alaska and northwestern Canada. Normally winters in fresh and saltwater marshes in the southern USA, through Mexico and Belize. Rare winter visitor to wetlands on Puerto Rico, e.g., 9 April 2001, Ca±o Tiburones Nature Reserve. TAXONOMY: CHARADRIIFORMES; SCOLOPACIDAE; Scolopacinae. In Europe, the Spanish name is Agujeta Escolopácea. |
