A buff-colored sandpiper with a white eye ring. Length: 18-20 cm.; weight: male 53-117 g., female: 46-81 g. Breeds on the high Arctic tundra of Alaska, Canada and eastern Siberia. Groups of males display in leks---a regular location where males try to attract a female by and strutting and flashing their white wing linings. Usually only one male in a lek attracts all the females. This sandpiper winters in northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil.
