A European gull with several different plumages until reaching sexual maturity at four years of age. Adults have a slate gray back and yellow legs (see photo below). First year immature birds are similar to the immatures of the Herring Gull, but are smaller, and the bill is proportionately more slender. Length: 51-61 cm.; weight: 550-1,200 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Rare in Puerto Rico (e.g. Mayagⁿez, 25 Jan., 31 Jan., 1 Feb., 6 Feb., and 17 March 2000, and Arecibo Harbor 22 December 2001 and 2 January 2002).
