A small gull with a black bill and a white wedge at the tip of the wing. Has a black head in breeding plumage and a white head with a black mark behind the eye in winter. Length: 28-30 cm.; weight: 170-239 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Nests in trees in swamps from Alaska to central Canada. Normally winters on the coasts of the USA, Bahamas and Cuba. Accidental in Puerto Rico (e.g. Río Añasco and Mayagüez Bay, 3-27 Feb. 2000, 27 Jan. 2001). TAXONOMY: CHARADRIIFORMES; LARIDAE; Larinae |
