A large parakeet with a black face and crown. The "thigh" feathers are reddish orange. Length: 32-37 cm.; weight: 120-141 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Native to Paraguay and northern Argentina. This species is uncommon in Puerto Rico where it has been reported recently from the Isla Verde and Fajardo. It is still bred and sold locally for the cage bird trade, so that individuals in the wild may be either escapees or from locally breeding populations. TAXONOMY: PSITTACIFORMES; PSITTACIDAE; Arinae. Also called Nanday Parakeet, Nanday Conure. |
