Similar to the Puerto Rican Parrot, but with a dark red belly, and white rather than red feathers at the base of the bill. Length: 28 cm.; weight: 180-193 g. Audio (J. & B. Wolf).* Native to Hispaniola where it is declining because of habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade. . This species is considered vulnerable to extinction with a total population of less than 10,000. Introduced and uncommon in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Many people confuse it with the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot. Regular locations include the Coast Guard base in Old San Juan and the woods near the Dorado Beach Hotel. TAXONOMY: PSITTACIFORMES; PSITTACIDAE; Arinae. Also called the Hispaniolan Amazon. |
