A small, reddish finch with small white spots on the wings. The female and non-breeding male have a brown back, red bill, and tiny white spots on the wings. Length: 10 cm. Audio (M. Oberle). Flocks with other introduced finches and feeds on grass seeds in marshy areas. Native to southern Asia. Introduced in Puerto Rico, but this species has become increasingly rare in the last few years and it is not clear if birds seen in the wild are recent releases or from wild populations (e.g. 2 at the Fajardo Christmas Bird Count, 20 December 1998; 1 at the Fajardo Christmas Bird Count, 19 December 1999). TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; ESTRILDIDAE; Estrildinae. Also called Strawberry Finch and Red Munia. |
