The adult is dark gray above, white below, with an iridescent, dark hood and a thick gray bill. Immatures are dull brown. Length: 11 cm. The call is a low, "churring" note. Audio (M. Oberle). Often perches side-by-side, in a row on a branch. This species is common in lowland gardens and weedlots where it feeds on small seeds.
