A black-and-white finch with a red breast and a large bill. Immature birds (see photo) are less dramatically marked than adult males, but are more likely to wander off course in migration. Length: 18-22 cm.; weight: 39-49 g. Audio (M. Oberle). On its breeding grounds, the male does little of the incubation, but unlike most bird species, it sometimes sings from the nest. A rare migrant in coastal areas, swamps, and dry or wet forests in Puerto Rico (e.g. Barrio Cialitos, Ciales, 20 November 1998; a male and a female at Maricao State Forest, 4 March 2001; Camuy, 15 February 2004). TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; CARDINALIDAE |
