An iridescent purple throat and breast distinguish this species. The crown, back and belly are black. Its bill is slightly downcurved. Immature birds have an orange throat. Length: 11-12 cm.; weight: 7-12 g. Females have longer and more curved bills which are adapted for feeding on different flower species than males typically utilize. Breeds in the eastern Caribbean from St. Vincent north to Saba. This species has been spreading westward and has been reported from the Virgin Islands. A bird photographed on Culebra at Club Seaborne Hotel on July 12, 1997 may have been an immature of this species (see photo below), and at least four were reported from Culebra and Puerto Rico in 2000.
