A small, short-tailed warbler with a blue back. Length; 11.5 cm; weight: 8-10 g. Breeds in the Midwestern and eastern USA and southern Ontario. Winters in the foothills of the northern Andes in a narrow elevation range of 500-1,500 m. Has declined by 75% between 1966 and 2001. The probable reason for the decline: deforestation on both breeding and wintering grounds. The Cerulean Warbler is intolerant of forest fragmentation. Interestingly, the Blackburnian Warbler, which also winters on the east slope of the Andes, has not experienced the same population decline, probably because it winters at higher elevations where much of the forest is on slopes too steep to cut. Accidental on Mona Island (22 October 1987). Audio (M. Oberle).

TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; PARULIDAE
