A white heron, similar to the Snowy Egret but the lower bill is pale. The legs are dull greenish, and the exposed skin at the base of the bill is green rather than yellow. A dark gray form (see photo above) also occurs. Length: 55-65 cm. Breeds in coastal West Africa. This species and the Little Egret have become more common visitors to the New World in recent years. Accidental in Puerto Rico.

TAXONOMY: CICONIIFORMES; ARDEIDAE. Some taxonomists lump this species with the Little Egret.
