The male is blue above and rufous on the throat and breast. The female has an eye ring and is grayer above, with blue in the wings and tail. The juvenile resembles the female but is spotted above and below and lacks chestnut on the breast. Length: 16-21 cm.; weight: 28-32 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Perches in open areas and flies out to catch insects on the ground or in the air. Nests in eastern North America, south to Nicaragua. Winters in southern North America and Central America. Accidental in the Virgin Islands. May eventually occur in Puerto Rico. TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; TURDIDAE |
