A small, very active bird---brown above with a yellow wash below. Two prominent white wing bars and a white eye ring are striking, but the male's red crown patch is often concealed. Length: 9-11 cm.; weight: 5.0-9.7 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in forests of the northern and western USA and Canada. Winters in southern North America and less commonly in the Bahamas. Accidental migrant in Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola; may eventually be reported from Puerto Rico.
