El pecho amarillo y negro y la mancha castaña en las alas identifican al macho de este gorrión pequeño. Tamaño: 14-16 cm.; peso: 23-29 g. Audio (M. Oberle). El nombre en inglés alude al canto de esta ave, canto que se escucha solamente en los territorios de cría. Anida en el centro de América del Norte, invernando en la vertiente del Pacífico de América Central y el norte de América del Sur. La población nidificante ha disminuido, probablemente porque los agricultores que cultivan el arroz matan a millones en la zona de invernada. En Puerto Rico, una especie rara durante las migraciones en áreas costeras y campos (por ejemplo, en Río Piedras el 26 de septiembre de 1972).
