Nothing is more important than the fabrics you choose for your quilt. So take
your time, enjoy the hunt, and look for good quality fabrics that will last.
You’ll want your quilt to look good for years, and stand up to washing.
If you pick your fabric carefully your quilt may be around long enough for
future generations to enjoy.
Most quilters prefer 100 percent cotton fabrics. Cotton holds a press or crease well, and is the easiest to quilt. Besides, it just feels good against the skin.
When fabric shopping, look at more than color and pattern. Look closely at the fabric itself, and hold it up to the light. Can you see through it? Does it appear to be loosely woven? Does it stretch much when you pull it diagonally? You want fabrics that feel smooth, look tightly woven (the higher the thread count, the better the fabric), and don’t appear to fray or ravel. Avoid lacey, sheer or stretchy fabrics, or those with a natural pucker, such as seersucker.
Want to use fabric scraps you have around the house, or have salvaged from used clothing? Look at them with the same critical eye. If the fabrics seem sturdy, and aren’t too faded and worn, then they’re fine to use for the type of quilts you want to use up and enjoy. Be forewarned that these fabrics may wear out faster than new fabrics. But not all quilts need to be considered future heirlooms.
