Possible rule and more weasels and penguins Monday, 15-Nov-1999 19:15:47 132.176.12.183 writes: I don't think the following approach has appeared below (my apologies if it has) so I thought it may be useful to someone. Please correct me if I goof up. For each ciphertext letter pair, the first letter can code for the second but not vice versa. For example in the ciphetext pair TE, T can code for plaintext e, but E cannot code for plaintext t. Of course this concerns ciphertext letter pairs that do not appeared reversed (eg DE and ED), where neither can code for the other. Therefore looking at all the pairs in the message it is possible to eliminate certain combinations. I just did this in a big grid with the ciphertext letters on one side and plaintext letters at the top. By now following the other rules that have been outlined, the phrase "beware ice weasels" will only fit in one place beginning at character 139."red penguin frenzy" will fit at two locations, at chracter 42 and 74. This assumes that they are actually in there in this format. I haven't been able to reconstruct the grid from this information so far. BTW Seeker, thankyou for your combined frequency tally (version 2). I think it has a couple of errors. The correct ones are as follows: F F L .. Z .. Y W A V Y O O S Y O D .. L .. U F Z Y D A O D U K D I A Mersenne *************************** Sorry - My mistake Monday, 15-Nov-1999 22:06:38 195.35.2.67 writes: This doesn't hold. Back to the drawing board. Looking at the message and taking into account the letter combinations in the message we have. AL (1) - LA (2) BF (2) - FB (1) DL (1) - LD (3) DO (1) - OD (1) DS (1) - SD (1) ET (1) - TE (2) FT (1) - TF (1) FU (1) - UF (1) HU (1) - UH (1) LO (1) - OL (3) LY (1) - YL (2) No other duets have an opposite in the message. The probability that these form a square are quite high, though nothing is 100 % sure, because they are used interchangeably in the message AL and LA for example. Others that may form a square is AR (3) but this might also be horizontal or vertical just its counterpart being common in the English language. BG == NG is probable because of end statement that should be used in message. I do not believe XXXX is used in any other capacity except to fill spaces because removing 1 X makes the cipher uneven (no duets at the end) ND has a frequency in the English language of 1.13 according to an earlier post so the shortness of the message might allow for only having one ND in message. (I eliminated TE because its to close to the beginning of the sentence in the block) LD and ol ...3 st is a very common combination...to only appear 3 times in message might be low so...perhapps LD or ol is rather op ...don't know..sure is wierd (for suppossed to be easy) that theres no repeats or reversals anywhere...but I don't know how to backtrace building the box even with laurents great help below...I sure look forward to u all busting this one! got work to do....bye jeff ************************** I'm going to die if it does not work now.
