With the addition of the SPARCsummit 6400E, Amdahl now offers the broadest and most comprehensive line of large-scale open systems platforms in the industry-from departmental servers to UNIX solutions on a mainframe. The enterprise servers form the foundation for large, commercial decision-support systems, on-line transaction processing applications and data warehousing operations.
"Issues such as capacity, performance, system availability and access to key application software are the determining factors in selecting a computing solution today," said Michael Carabetta, vice president and general manager of Amdahl's Open Enterprise Systems business unit. "Since no one platform can possibly offer all the attributes a customer requires, we are continually expanding our open systems offering to ensure it encompasses the varied needs of the high-end commercial marketplace."
SPARCsummit 6400E. The SPARCsummit 6400E is a shared memory, symmetrical multiprocessor with up to 64 processors, 16 gigabytes of main memory and 10 terabytes of disk storage. The SPARCsummit can support thousands of active users and terabytes of data. This level of performance, together with Amdahl's ability to combine hardware and software to create reliable, secure open systems solutions, optimize the SPARCsummit 6400E as a solution for mission-critical, data-intensive on-line transaction processing and decision support systems in the commercial marketplace.
In December Amdahl successfully installed an on-line transaction processing solution at Churchill Insurance, a leading United Kingdom insurer. After an exhaustive evaluation process, two SPARCsummit 6400Es were selected to manage the insurer's complex query-intensive on-line insurance application system.
"The proven performance of the SPARCsummit 6400E coupled with Amdahl's integration and support capabilities made it an excellent choice for our large OLTP application," said Carl Ricketts, chief information officer of Churchill Insurance. "This infrastructure combined with Oracle's relational database management system will give us a demonstrable long-term competitive advantage."
The UTS System. Amdahl also introduced UTS 4.3, the latest version of its UNIX operating environment for System/390. This new release provides up to a 300 percent improvement in NFS performance over UTS 4.2, support for multi-mirror disk technology, the latest in relational database technology from Oracle and Informix, and improved interoperability through official XPG4 branding. These enhancements complement UTS' robust operating environment, offering commercial customers a reliable platform with the capacity to handle on-line transaction processing and data warehousing applications with thousands of users and multiple terabytes of data.
