Introduction to the INTERNET
Course Length: 1 day
Course Overview
During this 1 day course we will show you what the Net is all about,
how it works and what you can do there. We will show you many of the
tools you will use to perform your daily tasks, including:
- How Telnet allows you to remotely log on to other computers.
- How FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows you to transfer files to and
from remote computers over the net (instead of dialing up the remote
computer directly!).
- How with email you can communicate with anyone in the world that has an
Internet account. You will be shown how it works, how to get someone's
address, how to choose software, and select the software features you will
want to have. In addition you will be shown how to sign up for mailing
lists, what MIME is, and how to do things through email if you don't have
direct connection to the Internet. We will discuss security and privacy
issues and how you can deal with them.
- How you can access newsgroups (or USENET). There are over 10,000
discussion groups available that you can participate it. Learn about
them and the software used to access the daily posts. These discussion
groups are on almost all imaginable topics.
- How you can find things on the Internet with Archie, Finger, Whois,
Gopher, Wais and the World Wide Web (WWW).
- How you can set up a Home Page for the Web and hints on using Mosaic.
- And how to select among the various levels of service the Internet
provides and where to get those services.
