Introduction to the
World Wide Web

Course Overview
During this 1 day course we will introduce you the major concepts
and facilities of the Web, including:
- The concept of Hyperlinking, the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
Tagging Language, the Universal Resource Locator (URL), Browsers to retrieve
documents, Web Servers to provide pages to clients, and Hypertext Transfer
Protocol (HTTP) to do transfer of document.
- Setting up a Web Server. We will discuss the basics of setting up
and installing a server at your site, includiing using inetd, the mapping
of URLs to documents, setting up home pages, and conventions for public access.
- Authoring for the Web to create your own documents, an HTML overview
with sample document, Autoflowing and Autowrapping, HTML Tag Syntax,
Document construction guidelines, Hyperlinks, URLs, Lists, graphics,
design issues and style guidelines. We will discuss several HTML authoring
tools, conversion tools and filters. Also discussed are Clickable Image Maps.
- Web Gateways and Forms to access other services on the Internet, Common
Gateway Inerface (CGI), prompting for input, forms processing, and Wide
Area Information Service (WAIS) access from the Web.
- Web Access Control and Security, user authentication to control/reject
access by Internet address or username/password.
