eXtend is Hummingbird's file management and transfer system for the X Windows environment. This
suite of X Window System clients resides on a UNIX host, permitting access to the DOS file
structure and printer of a Hummingbird X server-equipped PC without leaving the X
Windows environment. Offering full PC file management functions, eXtend completes
Hummingbird's product family by closing the UNIX/DOS circle.
Supplied in source format so that it may be compiled on a variety of UNIX hosts,
eXtend has been desinged to make use of the standard X libraries contained in the MIT X Window
Version 11, Release 3, 4, or 5. The client suite utilizes an extension to the base X Window protocol
which is supported by the complete line of Hummingbird PC X servers. Security is built in with
the use of passwords which permit only valid users on a host to access or modify PC files.
eXtend Functionality:
- EXAMINE the contents of any DOS directory in a variety of formats
- COPY files from UNIX to DOS, DOS to UNIX and DOS to DOS. The translation between
UNIX and DOS ASCII file format is automatic between environments. ASCII or binary file
transfers may be specified
- DELETE DOS files
- RENAME and MOVE DOS files
- CREATE DOS files
- RENAME DOS directories
- REMOVE DOS directories
- DISPLAY the contents of a DOS file
- PRINT DOS and UNIX files on the local PC printer
- EXAMINE the contents of the Server's LOG file while the server is running
- PASTE selected X text to a DOS file
- RUN a DOS process. This feature allows shelling to DOS applications with eXceed/DOS.
Also, with the corresponding eXceed PC X server, you may initiate DOS, Windows, Windows NT,
and OS/2 applications
- DESIGN custom host commands to run local PC applications
Hardware and Software Requirements
- UNIX host system with standard X libraries available in MIT X Window
Release 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, or 11.6
- PC equipped with one of Hummingbird's PC X server products
