SNA-Expert is a software product from Alcatel Bell that integrates the standard functions
of Solstice SunNet Manager with management functions for SNA networks. The principal
features of SNA-Expert are the automatic discovery of the SNA network configuration and
its incorporation into Solstice SNM views, and the fault and alarm reporting based on high
level filtering and correlation principles.
SNA-Expert is a software chain, consisting of:
- SNM-Bridge, a software installed on every SNA host, that collects configuration and
event information from VTAM and/or NetView, and is able to emit VTAM or NetView
commands.
- SNM-Expert SNA, a software installed on Sun to communicate with the NM-Bridges,
exchange command/ replies, and correlate the SNA management information.
- SNM-Bridge is the software agent running on Sun responsible for the interaction with the
Solstice SNM applications.
The principal characteristics of SNA-Expert are the following:
- Automatic discovery of the SNA configuration at startup, and incremental adaptations
afterwards. SNA recognized objects include SNA networks, hosts, cross domain resource
managers and resources, PUs (including SSCP and NCP), LUs (including applications),
major nodes, lines, link stations, transmission groups, and routes.
- Pre-defined, but freely configurable icon and view representation of the SNA network
components, integrated in the existing Solstice SNM view framework.
- Collection, filtering and correlation in time and place of VTAM messages and/or
NetView messages. Together with this goes the generation of high-level traps for the SNA
network elements where problems appear. Those traps are uniformly treated in Solstice
SNM, so that display and log services are fully available.
- A summary window allows for an overview of the actual SNA problems, and a consistent
treatment of those problems.
- A command window allows a launch VTAM and NetView commands (accessible in a
menu).
As an option this software can be extended. New filtering and correlation rules can be
defined or other alarms can be considered (e.g. application alarms).
In the SNA network, an NM-Bridge software has to be installed and configured on each
host. Currently, the NM-Bridge runs on the MVS operating system.
The connection between SNA network and the Sun machine is done through a LU6.2
session with one of the NM-Bridges. For this, an SDLC line, or token ring connection has
to be configured on the Sun, and in the SNA network. The Sun machine must be a SPARC,
with color screen, 64 Mb of main memory, at least 120 Mb of swap space and 100 Mb of
free disk space for software installation. Moreover, the Sunlink SNA
Peer-to-Peer communication software (LU6.2) is required.
Solaris version: 1.1 (will be 2.3 Q4/95)
Solstice application/version: Solstice SNM 2.2.2
Types of integration: Uses Agent API, Uses Manager API, Requires Solstice SNM to run
