MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - July 25, 1995 - The SunService division of Sun Microsystems, Inc. is implementing industry-leading support bundled with SPARCcluster(TM) PDB(TM) and High Availability (HA) products. Services include installation, consulting, and training for system operators. SunService will also provide inter-operability support for the Oracle(R) parallel server, together with the Oracle Corporation.
"The mission-critical customer is extremely time-sensitive," noted Grant Ruesch, vice president and general manager for SunService System Support. "Every minute these businesses are off-line, it's money down the drain. SunService will be held to the highest performance levels. We've been investing in our infrastructure to meet the needs of these customers."
Through a special support agreement, Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC) and SunService are bundling the high availability service offering with the SPARCcluster system purchase. The support bundle includes 7 x 24, two-hour on-site service and telephone support with live transfer to an engineer. The bundle also includes installation and education as part of the services provided. SunService will begin support of the SPARCcluster HA systems later this fall. "SunService's bundling of the two hour on-site response with their High Availability offering is an advance in the service industry," commented Doug Chandler, Senior Analyst with International Data Corporation. "This level of support is extremely competitive compared with what the toughest competitors offer, and many competitors are not able to match this level of commitment without charging additional fees."
A Cooperative Technical Support Agreement (CTSA), including high availability support, has been signed between SunService and Oracle Corporation.
SunService Growth Accommodates Offering
SunService is making a large investment in highly-skilled consultants and senior support engineers to meet the needs of customers and to accommodate the high availability offering, according to Larry Hambly, president of SunService and chief quality officer for Sun Microsystems, Inc. "One of the largest areas of investment at SunService has been, and continues to be, furthering the population of the direct field support organization with senior-level engineers focused on customers with these high-end systems. We're delivering on our promises."
Included Services and Their Management
All services will be provided through SunService. Planning and installation support includes the installation and configuration plan, Sun(TM) hardware installation, Solaris(TM) operating system installation and tuning, Sun unbundled failover software for the SPARCcluster HA system or the cluster management software for SPARCcluster PDB, and selected third party software installation, system software configuration and tuning, and verification testing. Also included is training for the customer's support personnel to reduce potential downtime and to ensure a smooth operation.
