Sexton's Records

Most public, commercial, and large denominational cemeteries maintain excellent burial records, sometimes called Sexton's records. Any cemetery with an office or full-time caretaker should have burial records, including the exact location, owners, and contents of each plot. Check the sexton's records first, otherwise it may take hours to find the burial plot!
Transfers of burial sites to the original buyer had to be recorded just like any other real estate and sextons have been responsible for creating and maintaining cemetery deed books to keep track of those transactions. Private owners of a burial site can sell, transfer ownership, or bequeath title to anyone, but the transaction must be recorded.
When you don't know where a person is buried, ask relatives for the information. If they can't help you, death certificates and obituary notices should state the place of interment and name the undertaker.
