Dower Release
from the eighteenth Century

Dower Releases

In places where a married woman has been entitled by law to a specific portion (one-third in most places) of her husband's property or estate for life, she is said to have "dower's rights".
A dower release simply waives a wife's right to property.

You will find dower releases in deed books and probate court records.

At times, as in the example, the dower will have remarried and the release will identify her then current married name, as well as the name of her deceased first husband.
