In places where a married woman has been entitled by law to a specific portion (one-third in most places) of her husband's property or estate for life, she is said to have "dower's rights". |
A dower release simply waives a wife's right to
property.
You will find dower releases in deed books and probate court records. |
At times, as in the example, the dower will have remarried and the release will identify her then current married name, as well as the name of her deceased first husband. |
