Passenger List

Immigration Passenger Lists start in 1882 and exist for thirty-nine ports, including the major ports of Baltimore, Boston, New York, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
Indexes to these lists exist for:
Baltimore: 1897-1952
Boston: 1902-1940
New York: 1897-1948
New Orleans: 1902-1954
Philadelphia: 1883-1948
San Francisco: 1893-1934
The Canadian Border Entries is a collection of lists documenting the arrival of a large number of passengrs who arrived at Canadian ports but were bound for the United States. It should be consulted for persons arriving after 1895 whose names do not appear on an Immigration Passenger List.
Four indexes to the Canadian entries exist for the years 1895 through 1954.

Knowing the exact birthplace or exact town where an immigrant ancestor resided before immigrating is a must if you want to trace their ancestry in the records of a foreign country. The passenger lists can be the key to discovering the name of an immigrant's birth place or foreign residence.

A passenger's birthplace or residence appears most often in the column labeled "Hailing place or Place of starting."

Microfilmed copies of the passenger lists are available at the National archives and its Regional Centers, various public and private libraries, the LDS Family History library and its Centers, and various public and private libraries, and the LDS Family History Library and its Centers.
