France and England continued to oppose one another during the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars between 1793 and 1815. With many battles waged at sea, both violated the maritime rights of neutral powers, including those of the United States. |
The British Royal navy seized nearly 1,500 American vessels between 1803 and 1812. Then in 1812, the Brtitish Parliament issued Orders in Council that authorized British personnel to board American ships and impress crew members into service to the crown. The United States Congress declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812, before word could reach the United States that the Orders in Council had been repealed. |
Battles waged on land and at sea for over two years. The war ended on December 24,1814 with the Peace of Ghent, but the Battle of New Orleans waged on until January 8, 1815 when General Andrew Jackson defeated the British army there. |
