The United States and Native Americans entered into many armed
conflicts over encroachment upon Indian lands, violation of existing
treaties, and other disagreements. These are the major Indian Wars
recognized by the United States for military service benefits:
- Battle of Tippecanoe - Indiana, 1811
- First Seminole War - Florida, 1817-1819
- Black Hawk War - Illinois and Wisconsin, 1831-1832
- Second Seminole War - Florida, 1835-1842
- Navajo Wars - New Mexico and Arizona, 1846-1868
- Third Seminole War - Florida, 1848-1858
- Yakima Wars - Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, 1855-1858
- Utah War - Utah, 1857-1858
- Aroostook War - Maine, 1839
