Veterans' Home Record

Veterans' Home Record

Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who received a pension for their service may also have been eligible to live in a Veterans' Home. Several types of records were made by Veterans' Homes, but the records most commonly found are death notifications sent to the Bureau of Pensions.
You can usually find death notifications in the ancestor's pension file, and use them to locate other records from the Veterans' Home. If you know that an ancestor died in a Veterans' Home, but don't have any record, look for the pension file to find further information about the Home.
Records of a few Veterans' Homes have been abstracted and published, but almost none have been microfilmed. The original records are housed at the National Archives.
