Where to Locate

Locating early newspapers can be a challenge. It's a good idea to begin by checking county histories for the place of interest to obtain the names and publishing dates of early newspapers.
Union lists of newspapers give dates and frequency of publication, title changes, where back issues are located, and the names of libraries, archives, and universities with microfilmed copies of back issues in their collection. Once you know which library has the newspaper you need, a copy can be requested through inter-library loan.

Check these publications to identify the newspapers printed in an area of interest and where they can be used:

  • Brigham, Clarence. History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690-1920, 2 vols. Worcester, Mass.: American Antiquarian Society, 1947.
  • Gregory, Winifred. American Newspapers, 1821-1926: A Union List of Files Available in the United States and Canada 1937. Reprint. New York: Kraus, 1967.
  • U.S. Library of Congress publication Newspapers in Microform: United States, 1848-1983, 2 vols. (Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, 1984).
