Removal Records

Removal records have been confused with disciplinary records, but they differ greatly.
Removal records pertain to people who have asked to be removed from a denomination's rolls when they intend to move to another place.
When Quakers, members of the Society of Friends, moved from one place to another, they were issued certificates from their local meeting to take with them to their new congregation. The certificate verified that they were members in good standing and recommended their acceptance in the new congregation.
A few other Protestant denominations kept removal records, but the majority simply entered notes about someone's departure in the margins of their church registers.
