xv_ping
xv_ping - an XView program to monitor hosts on the internet using ICMP echoes
SYNOPSIS
XV_PING maintains a list of hosts on the internet and associates a
latency with them. There is a global clock that can be set from 30
seconds to one day in one second intervals. When the time on the clock
runs out the program tries to ping every host in the list and waits
for the host to respond until the latency specified with the host. The
minimum latency is 10ms, and the maximum is 5000ms.
This program must be run as root to allow it to send the ICMP
echo packets.
DESCRIPTION
Once the program is started you may type in a host name, and either
set, or use the default latency (10ms). If you press the
Insert
button the host will be inserted into the list. To the right of the host
name the latency for that host will appear. If the program cannot
find the host there will be an error message popped up, and the host
will not be inserted in the list. There are two shortcuts to entering
a host . You may press return in the
Host Name
type in and this will attempt to perform the same operation as an
insert.
To remove a host from the list select the host name with the left
mouse button. The host name will be highlighted when it is selected.
Then press the
Delete
button. The host is now removed from the list and will not be pinged
again.
To change the latency on a host, select the host name with the left
mouse button. The host name will be inserted into the
Host Name
type in, and it's latency will be placed in the
Latency
type in. You may now modify the latency and either press the
Insert
button or press return in either of the type ins to put in the edited
entry.
When a host is up there is a smiley face next to its name in the list,
when the host is down there is a frowning face instead.
To quit press the
Quit
button and then press the
Quit
button in the confirmation popup. If you did not intend to quit press
the
Save My Walrus
button in the confirmation popup.
This program adheres to the Open Look GUI spec.
