Name

philspell - correct problematic spelling in text files

Syntax

philspell [-v] [-f file]

Description

The command collects words from the standard input and looks them up in a spelling list. Words that are not on the spelling list and are not deriveable from words on the list (by applying certain inflections, prefixes or suffixes) are corrected. To the standard output, prints the original text with all misspelled words corrected.

Options

-v
Verbose mode; causes philspell to output a description of the actions it performs when attempting to convert the input words into dictionary-bound forms. This output is printed to stderr.
-f file
Specifys the file used for the spelling list; the default is /usr/dict/words. The list specified here must be in the same format.

Restrictions

Because of the intricate nature of the calculations performed, spelling correction can be a very CPU intensive process. On slow machines with long files or big dictionarys, can take a few minutes to run.

The coverage of the spelling list (dictionary) is uneven; new installations will probably wish to monitor the output for several months to gather local additions.

The command works only with ASCII text files.

Files

/usr/dict/words     spelling list, default for -f
