Caught up in the magic of the 1994 Olympic Winter Games televised from Lillehammer, I was reminded recently that truly world class citizens do more than excel at their specialities. Many excel at helping people all over the world, notably Norway's incredible speed skater Johann Olav Koss, whose generosity has brought joy and accomplishment to thousands of kids with shattered lives. That brought to mind Joanna Strohn's story in this issue ("Moving Right Along") about our very own Larry Ledlow, chief sysop of GEnie's Radio RoundTable, who is right now not only giving freely of his time and expertise, but risking his very life in Croatia, the former Yugoslavia, on a volunteer mission for the United Nations. Ever had a chance to talk with someone like that -- someone who is really putting it on the line? We can't deliver Koss, but you can "talk" directly with Larry Ledlow on GEnie in a series of Real-Time Conferences, live from Croatia! Three of GEnie's most popular RoundTables -- Germany & Europe, the Public Forum, and Military -- are sponsoring this series of Conferences originating from Zagreb, Croatia, featuring Larry Ledlow on the scene! Larry will provide eye-witness reports on current events in Croatia, Serbia, and of course Bosnia, and hopes to have other UN personnel, and perhaps even Croatian citizens, on hand to answer questions. Don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a historic event, the first online conference from a potential war zone. And don't delay! Larry's first Conference in this series will be history by the time you read this, although all times and dates are subject to change due to the uncertainty of his situation in Croatia. Updated information will be posted in Category 1, Topic 10, on the Germany & Europe Bulletin Board on Page 725. Feel free to post questions there that you'd like Larry or others in Croatia to address, and watch the Libraries of these respective RoundTables for Conference Transcripts. LIVE from CROATIA Conference Schedule Sunday, February 20th starting at 5 PM Eastern Time in the EUROPE RoundTable Conference area; focus will be description/history of the former Yugoslavia. Type EUROPE or M725 at any GEnie prompt to participate. Friday, February 25th at 6 PM Eastern Time in the PUBLIC FORUM RoundTable Conference area; political discussion. Type PF or M545 to get there. Friday, March 4th at 6 PM Eastern time in the MILITARY RoundTable Conference area; focus on military aspects. Type MILITARY or M155. Radio Free Europe Another way to keep current with conflicts in Bosnia and the volatile new countries that made up the USSR is by downloading Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports from Public Forum's Library 19. Small in size but big in importance, these daily reports follow a naming convention that makes them quick and easy to find: RFMMDDYY.ZIP, with MMDDYY standing for the month, day, and year, as in file #4722 RF021894.ZIP. We've Got Winners! Joseph Gallagher turned in a record performance this season in the 1993-94 NFL Football Pool sponsored by GEnie's Sports RoundTable. Playing every week, Joe picked the winners of weekend NFL games against the point spread, amassing an amazing 61.39% winning percentage by picking 132 of the 215 games throughout the season. What a record! RSCARD's newcomer Gregory Tomlin overcame a 7-0 deficit to defeat fellow first-timer Larry Bosen by a score of 9-7 and claim the championship of the RSCARDS Winter 1994 Backgammon Tournament. Third place was shared by Steve Vintner and former champion Glenn Daily; and fourth place went to David Hamilton, Judi Weiler, William Harris, and Candy Purcell. A purse of $477 in cash and connect time prizes was shared by the top four finishers. Our congratulations to all!
