Box 4139 Highland Park, NJ 08904 Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Can I build connectors for the Gloves or Glasses myself? A: Yes. Instructions for doing so are included on the demo disk. Object Glove and Object Glove Source include printed instructions for making a one or two glove connector, and instructions for converting a one glove connector into a two glove connector. The glove connectors require no special electronic parts. The 3-D glasses connectors require several kinds of electronic parts that are commonly available. A schematic for the 3-D glasses to serial port connector is included on the demo disk. Q: Can I get 3-D Glasses or Glasses connectors somewhere else? A: Yes. 3DTV Corp. sells 3D Glasses and Serial Port Connectors that work with Rend386. 3DTV Corporation P. O. Box Q San Rafael, CA 94913-4316 Phone: (415)-479-3516 Fax: (415)-479-3316 Reel 3D sells Toshiba 3D glasses that are compatible with Sega 3D glasses. The Toshiba glasses are better quality and are more ergonomic. Reel 3D Enterprises, Inc. P.O. Box 2368 Culver City, CA 90231, USA Phone: (310) 837-2368 Fax: (310) 558-1653 Q: What are the uses of a Two Glove system? What about my left hand? A: Using two right handed gloves would allow two (right handed) people to each have a glove at the same time. No left handed gloves were ever constructed by Mattel. However, in the printed documentation for Object Glove, there are instructions for disassembling a Power Glove(TM) and modifying it to work on a left hand. Of course, you'll probably want to disassemble and modify the right hand glove too since this produces a more comfortable glove. These instructions are used by permission of Todd Porter. Q: From where may I download the demo software? A: On the Internet, anonymous FTP to "sunee.uwaterloo.ca" and look in the "pub/glove" directory. Don't forget to transfer the files in BINARY mode! Also, the University's bandwidth is pretty low, so FTPs will go faster when it's late at night. On CompuServe, there is a VR Tech section in the Graphics Developers' Forum (GO GRAPHDEV). A variety of VR software and files can be found there, including the demos for Object Glove. Q: What is VRASP? A: Contact Karin August at the above address for more information about the Virtual Reality Alliance of Students and Professionals. Her email is "kaugust@caip.rutgers.edu" on the Internet, or 71033,702 on CompuServe. Q: Does Object Glove use a lot of C++ or object oriented programming? Can I use it if I just know C or some other language? A: Object Glove does use a lot of C++ specific programming. If you are a C programmer, you should be able to fathom enough from the sample programs in order to incorporate the glove into your own programs. The Court Jester recognition system is very object- oriented and ordinary C programmers will likely have some difficulty. However, even a novice C++ programmer should be able to utilize Court Jesture in some capacity. Programmers using a language other than C or C++ would find it very difficult to use Object Glove or Court Jesture. Q: What is the relationship between Rend386 and Object Glove? A: Rend386 is a "freeware" software package that draws polygons at high speed in a basic VGA 320x200x256 color mode, performs 3-D perspective transformations, and maintains a world database for 80386 and higher PC systems. Rend386 was written in C and Assembly by Dave Stampe and Bernie Roehl of the University of Waterloo. A previous version of Rend386 included support for one glove; however, the glove response was not as reliable or efficient as it is with Object Glove. The demo disk contains all the source code for Rend386 EXCEPTING Object Glove, which is required during the link step. (Some Object Glove header files are also required.) The version of Rend386 on the Demo disk has been compiled as a C++ program so that it can be easily merged with Object Glove, but it still contains Assembly code and it is not truly object-oriented. While Object Glove can be incorporated into any commercial or non- commercial program with no runtime fee, Rend386 must be licensed from Dave Stampe and Bernie Roehl.
