Return to Zork CD-ROM version 1.1 ----------------------------------- All company or product names are trademarks or registered trademarks or service marks of their respective owners. 1. ADLIB USERS Return to Zork CD-ROM requires a sound card that supports digital audio as well as music. As the AdLib card only supports music, you will need to add a digital audio card or device to your computer system. We offer the low-cost LifeSize Sound Enhancer, which attaches to your printer port for digital audio. Please contact the customer service number found in your manual for more information. 2. ADLIB GOLD USERS You may experience clicking or popping sounds while playing Return to Zork CD-ROM with this audio card. Return to Zork CD-ROM supports the DigPak sound system which is supported by AdLib products. Please contact the manufacturer of your card to determine the availability of updated DigPak drivers. When you receive a new DigPak driver, copy it into the DRIVERS subdirectory. 3. INSTALLING UNDER 386MAX If the 386MAX memory manager is active, the installer may run very slowly. You might want to disable 386MAX before running INSTALL. 4. ADDITIONAL MADECD.EXE COMMAND-LINE SWITCHES -L Move video buffers into XMS or EMS memory. Using this is highly recommended, as it reduces the amount of conventional memory required by about 64K bytes. Using this switch may result in slightly decreased performance. 5. RUNNING UNDER QEMM 7.0 a. Do not use the "UMB" option in the "DOS=" line in CONFIG.SYS. b. Change "LOADHIGH" to "LOADHI" wherever it occurs in RTZ.BAT. c. Adding the "RH:N" option to the "QEMM386.SYS" line in CONFIG.SYS may prevent memory problems while playing the game. 6. CD SPEED TEST For Return to Zork CD-ROM to operate properly, your CD-ROM drive must be able to maintain a minimum level of data throughput. To verify CD-ROM drive performance, a utility called TESTCD has been provided. To invoke the utility, insert the Return to Zork CD-ROM disc and type: TESTCD x: where "x" is the letter of the CD-ROM drive. TESTCD will determine the speed of the drive and report it to you. If the reported speed is below 150 kilobytes per second, the quality of the walk through movies in the game may be affected. In this case, you may prefer to disable these movies. See your Return to Zork CD-ROM user's manual for instructions. If the reported speed is below 100 kilobytes per second, the quality of the character conversations in the game may be affected. 7. OPENING MOVIE SOUNDTRACK SELECTION On certain systems, such as those with poor CD-ROM throughput, low processor speed, or slow VGA adapters, you may detect jumps in the soundtrack during the opening and final movies. To eliminate this problem, run the Return to Zork CD-ROM installer and answer "NO" to the question, "Do you want to play a digital soundtrack during the opening movie?" This will cause a MIDI soundtrack to be played instead. 8. ADVANCED GRAVIS ULTRASOUND USERS Do not use the Sound Blaster emulation driver: SBOS. The drivers supplied with Return to Zork CD-ROM will use your equipment directly. If you are experiencing DIVIDE ERRORS, please look for the file VOICEOOH.PAT in the ULTRASND\MIDI subdirectory. If this file is not available, please contact Gravis for a patch update. 9. DISK COMPRESSION UTILITIES You may experience difficulty installing or running Return to Zork CD-ROM if you use any disk compression utilities such as DoubleDisk, Stacker, DoubleSpace, etc. If you experience such a problem, try deleting all the files in the new Return to Zork CD-ROM subdirectory (often called \RTZ-CD). Then run a defragmentation program and try installing again. 10. LIST OF FILES Following is a description of all files distributed with or created by Return to Zork CD-ROM.
