What is a Webcam?

A webcam enables the transmission of live images over the World Wide Web. Anyone, anywhere with Internet access can view these images. Webcam images are analogous to "live windows" that can be viewed from anywhere in the world via the Internet.

How does a Webcam work and what do I need to set one up?

A webcam is actually a system consisting of a camera, in some cases a video capture card, a PC, special imaging software such as CamRunner, an Internet connection, and a web page to send the images. Each of these parts work together to capture an image, compress it, and transfer it to a specified site on the World Wide Web.

DCN created CamRunner software to be affordable, easy to use and the most powerful webcam software available. CamRunner works with PCs running Windows 95, Video for Windows™ capture cards and/or cameras, and an Internet connection (dedicated or dial-up).

Do I need a dedicated connection to the Internet?

No. CamRunner uses either a dedicated connection (LAN) or a dial-up connection to send live images.

How often do Webcams update images?

You can configure the system to update images anywhere from once a day to several times per second. Factors influencing the frequency of image updates include the sophistication of the hardware/software, the available bandwidth, and the speed of the network connection.

Do I need a Plug-In to view Webcam images?

No. You only need a graphic Web browser such as Netscape's Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer to view webcam images.

Are all Webcams accessible to the general Internet audience?

Many webcams are used for corporate or private personal uses. In these situations, only persons with pre-designated passwords, etc. can view the images.

What can I do with a Webcam?

Webcams can serve a variety of functions ranging from personal uses to business monitoring. A Webcam may capture views of the changing skies over the Andes Mountains or live pictures of people walking through the streets of Paris.

Webcams allow commuters to view live traffic conditions on popular routes, travelers to check up-to-the-moment weather conditions around the world, and students to observe a rare baby panda at a faraway zoo.

Many private companies utilize the power of webcams to enable management to oversee remote business operations. Daycare centers utilize webcams to offer working parents live visual access to their children throughout the workday. The applications for webcams are limitless. Contact DCN for further business monitoring solutions.

How can I register my webcam with DCN?
