6/1 1980: A man from Falmouth ME, who had been blind since a 1971 truck accident, was struck by lightning & regained his eyesight. 6/2 1986 (2nd-4th): A tropical disturbance brought flooding rains across parts of the Greater Antilles. 240,000 people lost their homes. 6/3 1968: For the first time in June since 1892, not a single clear day was observed in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan for the month. 6/4 1920: A hard surface road through nearly level country in Boggs Flat, Colorado was washed out to a depth of 7' after 14" rain. 6/5 1917: Disk-shaped hailstones 6" to 10" in diameter and 2" to 3" thick were reported to have fallen near Topeka, Kansas. 6/6 1975: A tornado sighted near Alva, Oklahoma was reported to have been spinning backwards (clockwise). 6/7 1989: A DC-8 crashed into the jungle attempting to land in a thick fog shrouding the Paramaribo (Suriname) airport. 6/8 1953: Michigan's worst tornado killed 116 people, the last US tornado that killed more than 100 people. Flint was hardest hit. 6/9 1987: Lightning striking "Tire Mountain" near Denver CO destroyed two million tires out of a huge pile of six million tires. 6/10 1969: Hail damaged about 80% of the homes and businesses (5600 structures) in Plainview, Texas. 6/11 1984: A 160 mph downburst mph blew a home near Rowena SD totally off its foundation and scattered debris for several miles. 6/12 1947 (11th-12th): A record late snow blanketed much of WY, with over 18.4" at Lander, 8.7" at Cheyenne, and 4.5" at Casper. 6/13 1984: Snowplows had to clean up softball size hail in Denver that smashed windshields and ripped through metal cars. 6/14 1903: A cloudburst over Willow Creek led to a 20' wall of water which swept away 1/3 of the buildings in Heppner, Oregon. 6/15 1988: A man in Denver survived a tornado by clinging to a phone pole. He lost, however, both shoes, a sock and shirt buttons. 6/16 1944: A tornado in Sioux City, Iowa spun in one place for 20 min, then traveled southeast, south, east, north, and east again. 6/17 1859: Hot Santa Ana winds at Santa Barbara, California roasted fruit on one side as they hung from trees. 6/18 1958: Hail 4" in diameter killed livestock in Carbon County, Montana as a storm traveled from Joliet to Belfry. 6/19 1972: Hurricane Agnes hit the US, eventually causing over $3 billion damage. 6/20 1928: A farmer in KS looked up a tornado's eye & observed: "rotating clouds...a strong gassy odor with a screaming, hissing sound". 6/21 1791: A huge hurricane wave carried off the coffin of a hated count as he lay in state in Havana, never to be seen again. 6/22 1989: 2 days after their record high of 102 degrees, Rapid City, South Dakota reported a record low of 39 degrees. 6/23 1969: In Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, a wall of water rising to 7' tumbled, swirled and crushed houses, vehicles, and street pavement. 6/24 1952: Hail with a 10" circumference fell in a swath 60 miles long and 3.5 miles wide in SD, killing poultry and livestock. 6/25 1988: Today's high of 100 degrees broke Erie, Pennsylvania's previous all-time record of 99 degrees (9/3/53). 6/26 1977: Park ranger Roy C. Sullivan, "The Human Lightning Conductor," survived being struck by lightning for the 7th time. 6/27 1957: After tossing a 78-ton boat onto an offshore drilling platform, Hurricane Audrey hit the US shore at Cameron, LA. 6/28 1975: Lee Trevino and two other golfers were struck by lightning in Oak Brook, Illinois at the Western Open golf tournament. 6/29 1954: Hurricane Alice dumped as much as 27" on Texas, leaving the roadway of the US 90 bridge 30' below the high water. 6/30 1972: The entire state of Pennsylvania was declared a disaster area from Hurricane Agnes' flooding.
