When installed on a Local Area Network, WinProxy acts as the network's intelligent Internet "gateway" by optimizing the management and routing of all Internet traffic through a single TCP/IP connection. This provides the user with four principal advantages: 1) Simultaneous Internet access for multiple users through a single Internet connection. This capability allows the user to eliminate the complexity and expense of maintaining multiple phone lines, modems, and user accounts for each individual connection under conventional schemes. 2) Establishment of a secure firewall. Properly installed, WinProxy prevents unauthorized access from the Internet to resources located on the Local Area Network. 3) Optimized Internet connection. By providing DNS and HTTP caching, access time to frequently visited sites is dramatically reduced, even though a single physical connection is shared throughout the network. 4) A managed Internet environment. Through features such as site blacklisting, activity logging, time of day access, and services authorization, Internet usage may be enabled and monitored on an individual and/or site basis. How WinProxy Works WinProxy is a software only solution. It does not require a dedicated server and is only installed on one PC on the network, typically the one maintaining the physical TCP/IP connection to the Internet. By installing WinProxy, the user in essence designates that PC as the only PC authorized to make a physical connection to the Internet. WinProxy then acts as the Network's intelligent Internet gateway by accepting authorized requests for Internet access from all other PCs and routing the connection through WinProxy on behalf of the individual users, hence the term proxy. Since Internet traffic tends to happen in "bursts", WinProxy not only allows multiple users to share access to a single physical connection, but also allows them to be on-line simultaneously. Internet access through WinProxy is virtually transparent to the network's users, they simply open their browser or e-mail application and are automatically connected to the Internet as if they had their own dedicated connection. WinProxy runs unattended as a service in the background, automatically establishing connections when required and logging off when service is no longer required. _________________________________________________________________ 30 Day Trial WinProxy is automatically enabled for 30 days of use. After 30 days, you will need to contact Ositis Software, or a WinProxy reseller to purchase a permanent license for WinProxy. _________________________________________________________________ Purchasing WinProxy You can order WinProxy with immediate delivery of a working serial number by either purchasing WinProxy using the on-line order form on our web site at http://www.winproxy.com, or calling our sales department at 1 888 946-7769 or +1 510 734-1900. The installer will guide you through the installation of WinProxy and its components. This will also create a WinProxy program group containing WinProxy, this file, the logging application and an un-installer in case you later want to remove the program. The first time you launch WinProxy, you will be presented with a registration screen requesting the information necessary to properly register your End-User License Agreement. WinProxy will automatically transmit this information to Ositis Software and update the registered user database to ensure your eligibility for technical support. You may want to make note of your serial number at this time in case you need it for customer or technical support purposes. It is the policy of Ositis Software to never sell this information to any third party. After this is completed select the Properties Wizard from the File menu. The Properties Wizard will step you through the initial setup. It will be easier if you have some information already at hand as you step through: a) The numeric IP address or name of your ISP’s news server (the name will be in a form similar to ‘news.myisp.com’). b) The numeric IP address or name of your ISP’s mail (SMTP) server. This is the address of the machine to which you send mail. c) The numeric IP address or name of your ISP’s POP server. This is the address of the machine from which you have been getting your mail. At many ISP’s the SMTP and pop servers are at the same address; at some they are not. d) The name of the Dial-Up networking connection that you use to connect to your ISP, your user name, and your password. e) The IP address(es) of your ISP’s DNS (Domain Name Service) machines. These are often given as the primary and secondary DNS servers; you will use the IP address of the primary DNS server in Properties Wizard. After you have configured WinProxy, select 'Show Client Configuration' from the WinProxy File menu. This will show you how to configure your client computers. This document changes as your settings change. We recommend that you check this document each time you reconfigure WinProxy. _______________________________________________________________ Version 2.1 Release Notes The 2.1 version of WinProxy fixes all known performance problems as well as adding several new features requested by users.
