It is most interesting to note that, so far as the literature of the
subject is concerned, the first device of this nature, involving
sequences of unequal numbers of chaacters, was invented by Sir Charles
Wheatstone... It is, therefore a source of considerable pride and
interest to learn that an American, Decius Wadsworth, has prior claim
to this invention by a good number of years.
