Keyboard Preferences

Provides functions to set up, modify, and manage the keyboard shortcuts for 3D Studio MAX.

Reference

The Plug-in Keyboard Shortcut Toggle lets you switch between using the 3D Studio MAX shortcut keys, and using shortcut keys assigned by third-party plug-ins. When this is on, and when the focus is on the plug-in, that plug-in’s shortcut keys are used instead of the 3D Studio MAX shortcut keys. Functions in the command panels are treated as third-party plug-ins, even if they ship with 3D Studio MAX.

The Keyboard preferences panel contains the following options:

Command

Choose the button representing the area for which you want to change shortcuts: Main UI, Material Editor, Track View, or Video Post. The shortcuts for that category become active and shortcuts for other categories are ignored.

Some keyboard shortcuts bring up a subdialog or place the focus in an editable field. When this happens, the keyboard shortcuts are ignored until you leave the field.

Select the 3D Studio MAX command to which you want to assign a shortcut. If the selected commands already has a shortcut assigned to it, the shortcut appears below the list.

Use Only Main U.I Shortcuts: Deactivates all but the Main UI shortcuts. The radio buttons above the list are unavailable if this option is selected.

Remove: Removes a shortcut from the selected command.

Save List to File: Saves the shortcuts for all the categories to a single text file. In the file, shortcuts are listed with their category titles and related functions.

Reset Category: Removes any shortcuts you've assigned for this category and returns them to their defaults.

Shortcut

Defines the combination of keys for the shortcut.

Press Key: Press any key (except Scroll Lock, Num Lock, or Pause) to use in combination with the CTRL, ALT, and SHIFT keys.

Assign: Assigns the current shortcut to the selected command.

Sets

Displays the list of named .kbd files containing custom shortcuts.

Save: Saves the custom keyboard assignments to a .kbd file you specify.

Delete: Deletes the selected shortcut file.
