ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
"The idea for this exhibit originated with a major assignment I shot for the Washington Post Magazine in 1987 on. Laurel Race Course in Maryland. There, and in a small color essay I did on a race track in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York, the strongest and most engrossing images were of the young people who worked and lived on the backstretch, particularly the young women exercise riders who so elegantly and gracefully perform a dangerous but essential role in the world of thoroughbred racing.
From the start, it was but a short step to this project where I am attempting to truly celebrate the skill, daring, and competence of women in all of the various ways in which they are engaged with horses. I have recorded images of women û young and not so young û in most parts of the horse world: as farriers, jockeys, veterinary surgeons, therapists, owners, trainers, teachers, breeders, exercise riders, hunters, competitors, -- riding, using, and caring for all breeds from thoroughbreds, saddlebreds, and standardbreds, to ponies, draft horses, and cutting horses. The exhibit illustrates the remarkable extent to which the horse relies on and looks to women.
Most of the photos were taken over the last year in Kentucky û the home of my maternal ancestors û especially for this exhibit.
