Soccer-Bogota fans hurt as stand collapses
BOGOTA, May 6 (Reuters) - At least 25 soccer fans were
injured when part of a Bogota sports stadium collapsed during a
match between the capital's two top teams Wednesday evening.
The accident occurred about 25 minutes into the game as fans
celebrated the Millionarios team's first goal against rivals
Santafe, a Reuters reporter at the scene said.
The injured fell between seven and 10 feet (2-3 metres) onto
seats below when a barrier in an upper part of a stand in the
northern part of the stadium gave way as spectators pushed
forward.
"The fans were jumping up and down shouting 'Millionarios'
when the railing gave way," Reuters reporter Luis Jaime Acosta
said.
Ambulances ferried the wounded to hospitals in the area.
None were believed to have life-threatening injuries.
"The rail just gave way and fell into the void just as we
were celebrating the Millionarios goal," 17-year-old Juan
Carlos Almansa, who suffered bruises, told Reuters. "About 80
of us fell."
The match continued uninterrupted but police cordoned off
the damaged section of the stadium and helped evacuate fans.
