Hya Folks.

I don't know if this topic has been discussed on the mailing list
before, though I seem to remember reading something about it a while
ago, but does anyone know a way of connecting my Amiga onto the net
via NTL? I applied to join their ISP about 4 months ago when they
first advertised they were going to do a free one. I only recieved my
connection disk a week ago and lo and behold, it only works with
Windoze 95 & 98 or a PPC Mac. I was told to log on using a PC (which I
don't have) and then transfer the details manually onto my Amiga. The
only way around this was to use a friends PC to get the details
sorted, but he's a bit reticent to do this because he has only just
signed up to NTL himself and he didn't want to screw his system up by
adding another set up.

I then decided to write to NTL directly in an email and the
following is the reply I received. I thought that their response
deserved some comment so I'd be glad to hear what other people on this
list think, plus any help getting onto their ISP will be gladly
accepted. I am already with NTL so the BT option isn't required.

Thanks in advance. Ewan.

BTW. I received my second NTL disk yesterday morning. :-)

Hi Ewan -

Thanks for your recent email, and we apologise for our belated reply.

First of all you must consider your connection. A different set of
circumstances needs to be considered as to whether you are an On-Net
customer (ntl: telephone) or an Off-Net customer (BT telephone).

With this in mind, it may be possile, but I would not recommend that
your friend create an account for you from his location, unless you
actually are an ntl: telephony customer, and even this would need to be
done at your own risk.

If you are a BT customer, you should be able to connect to the ntlworld
free pop by dialling 1263 0800 519 0100 ONLY from telephone numbers that
have been set up on our system.

Your BT number needs to be setup on ntl's IN platform which will
facilitate the required routing on to the ntl: telephony network by use
of the smart dialler OR by dialling 1263. You can have a maximum of 2
BT-numbers included so if you are dialling in from a BT line you will
need to advise us of the number/s.

Your modem can be plugged directly in to your BT phone socket, then the
pop number prefixed with 1263. Your telephone then should be plugged
directly into the smart dialler to enable routing of your voice calls.
As mentioned, you are entitled to set up 2 seperate BT numbers on the
ntl: server to facilitate the required routing.

I apologise, and do not wish to cause offense, however as Amiga is
virtually a dead (or at the very least a minority) operating system (and
we have only ever offered support for Windows 95/8 or Mac), we would
have no plans to accomodate this format at any time in the future.

I personally got involved with setting up an account for an Amiga
customer some time ago and it did take a great deal of attention.
Remember also that you will be accepting ntl's Terms & conditions when
you do register an account. For example, any account that is found to be
logged on for more than 24 hours per day, would be liable to immediate
disconnection.

If you have any other queries, don't hesitate to contact me again.

Yours Sincerely,

Jeff
